Mississippi History:
Mississippi was first explored for Spain by Hernando de Soto. He discovered the Mississippi River in 1540 and the area was later claimed by France. In 1699, a French group led by Sieur d'Iberville established the first permanent settlement colony near present-day Ocean Springs area. In 1763 after the French and Indian Wars, Great Britain claimed the area. In 1783 Great Britain ceded the area to the United States after the Revolution. In 1810 the U.S. gained control of West Florida from Spain and the area which is now Southern Mississippi. For over one hundred years cotton was the fuel that drove the Mississippi economy. Today Mississippi agriculture includes cotton, soybeans, corn, peanuts, pecans, rice, sugar cane and sweet potatoes. They also produce significant amounts of poultry, eggs, meat animals, dairy products, feed crops, and horticultural crops. Mississippi is the largest producer of pond raised catfish in the world.
On August 29th, 2005, Mississippi was hit hard by Hurricane Katrina. The storm raged onshore forcing a great storm surge. Harrison County suffered the most with hundreds of people killed and great amounts of property damage. Famous Mississippi Residents or Natives:
