Once a coconut grove until it was wiped out by disease in the '80's, Paamul has been owned by the same Mexican family who has owned it for decades. The owner is currently a political appointee in the local administration and has deep roots in the community, military, and government. In fact, rumour has it that the property was given to his forefathers by the government in exchange for excellent military leadership.

Since Paamul is also a sanctuary for the endangered sea turtle, ecological laws prohibit the building of large resort-type construction here. Turtles return year after year between May to July to lay and bury their eggs on the shores of Paamul and this year my husband and I were fortunate enough to watch one young female do just that. All birthing spots are marked with stakes as to their due dates. Paamulians have the privilege of assisting the young turtles into the ocean at their times of birth.

The Paamul community is made up largely of Canadian & American retirees, though there are a few young families and others as well. Most are snowbirds, but there are some full-time residents too. Park amenities & activities include a swimming pool, restaurant, hotel, cabanas, scuba shop, boat launch, convenience store, an English-speaking non-denominational church, volleyball, horseshoes, karaoke, dances, crab races and. Paamul boasts the title of being one of the Top Ten Scenic Beaches in Mexico!

Paamul is located approximately one hour south of Cancun, 10 minutes south of Playa del Carmen, and 3 kms north of Puerto Aventuras. This location offers the best of both worlds. A peaceful hamlet of tranquility with romantic, clear star studded evenings all located just 10 minutes from Xcaret, Sam's, Walmart, Office Depot, Movie Theatres, endless shopping, restaurants and the famous 5th Ave stroll of Playa del Carmen.

Paamul, located in a protected bay area just 15 miles east of Cozumel, has been described as the easiest diving in the Playa del Carmen - Cozumel area, yet the most rewarding. Once you immerse yourself in the balmy clear waters, you will wonder if anyone has ever visited these dive sites before you. This area of Mexico has so many reefs that they normally do not even name them. The 90, 60, and 40 foot reef systems run approximately 5 miles in either direction from Paamul (30+ miles of reef for you to dive) and offer really great snorkeling just steps from the sandy beach. There are dive sites appropriate for all diving skill levels. It is no wonder that so many visitors return to Paamul year after year for extended dive vacations.
