Thessaly

Thessaly is a geographical district of the Greek Nation which borders with Macedonia northly, Epirus westly, the Aegean Sea, Pagasitikos and Thermaikos Gulfs eastly and Sterea Ellada, in particular with the counties of Evritania and Fthiotida, southly. It is a large plain, which is surrounded from the Olympus and Kamvounia mountains (north-ward), the Othris mountain (south-ward), the Ossa and Pilio mountains (east-ward). There is an opening between Olympus and Kamvounia mountains which forms a passage to Macedonia. These mountain ranges were shaped during the period that Thessaly was an internal sea (a lake like area). The rivers and the torrents which were spliting Thessaly were slowly accumulating pebbles and sand and gradually formed the Meteora Rocks. The Pinios river with its tributary rivers, as well as many torrents, which spring from the mid of the mountains, split the Thessalian plain. The plain is also divided in the east plain of Larisa and the west plain of Trikala by a line of hills and from north to south (geographically). Thessaly's extension is 13.488 sq.km. and the population is about 695.654 inhabitants. It is administratively divided in 4 counties: Larisa, Trikala, Karditsa and Magnisia. The islands of the Northern Sporades (except Skyros) belong to Thessaly too. The climate is continental, which means that the summer is hot and the winter is cold because of the surrounding mountains that prevent the direct effect of the sea.
