This is our totally private, custom three-bedroom, three-bath Maui vacation home with pool and spa on five tropically landscaped acres. When we say a luxury pole house, we're describing a custom, wood-sided, multi-windowed, metal-roofed home where the main living area is ten feet up, supported by telephone poles. This affords views of the ocean and a rear view of the crater. The house sits on the edge of a scenic gorge that ends at the sea. Our view is wonderful. You drive beside a pineapple field to reach our electric gate. Once inside, you pass two groves of coconut trees before reaching the house. Our blue-tiled pool and connecting tiled spa are a perfect place to spend your afternoon and evening, or to swim those laps you have been promising yourself. You can choose to read a book in the hammock under the palm tree. The pool area and surrounding gardens are professionally landscaped with tropicals, ferns, and palms, providing total privacy. The trade winds come up in the afternoon, so that air conditioning is never needed. Most people tell us that it is hard to leave, and that they spend most of their time staying at the house, enjoying the pool and the view.

Amenities:
The upper part of the house includes a large living/dining room, master bedroom/bath with a king-sized bed, a second master bedroom/bath with a private deck and a large deck/lanai with a gas barbecue and outside stereo speakers. There is a 36-inch Sony TV on a satellite, a VCR/DVD player, and a stereo. Because we realize that it's important in today's world to be able to conduct business wherever we are, there's a large desk area in the master bedroom. You'll find an Epson printer (compatible for both Mac and PC), a fax machine/copier and, of course, an answering machine. The kitchen is like no other. Our kitchen cabinets are all Koa wood, hand crafted by a local cabinet maker/artist. The kitchen is fully equipped (blender, Cuisinart, coffee grinder, etc.). The bathroom's cabinets are Purple Heart Wood, and the tile is hand painted. The ground level part of the house includes an efficiency kitchen and a living room that opens onto a terrace that looks out over the fields and groves. There is a bedroom/bath with two twin beds. In the living room is a high quality queen-size futon. There are also a TV and VCR here, with a separate receiver to the satellite. The upstairs bedrooms both have king-sized beds. Our Maui vacation home accommodates a maximum of 10 people.

Activities and Nearby Attractions or Points of Interest:
If you like to walk, try this route: go through the pineapple field to the cow pasture at the ocean's edge. Climb over the barbed-wire fence and follow the path down to a beautiful rock beach on a private cove. Or perhaps settling down on the bluff at the edge of the Pacific with a good bottle of wine would be preferable. You could also walk the other way, across the Hana Highway and up the hill to the Pauwela Cafe for a latte or lunch. Ohashi's store, just across the street, has great ice cream cones. If you have the yen to swim at the beach, drive eight miles to Paia and visit Baldwin Beach, or go to Baby Beach at Sprecklesville. Be sure to leave time to watch the windsurfers at Hookipa. If the opportunity to swim in a pool beneath a waterfall offers more appeal, head toward Hana for about 10 minutes until you reach Mile Marker 15, park, and hike on up to Twin Falls. Golf courses abound on Maui. The majority of the well-known courses are to be found at Wailea or at Kanapali, about an hour away. However, there are public courses in Kahalui and Pukalani. The closest course to the house is at Maui Country Club in Sprecklesville, a private club that also has tennis courts. You would need to contact them directly to arrange a visit. Eating is a big pastime on Maui. Mama's Fish House is one of the best restaurants anywhere, and is just five miles away. It's expensive but worth it. Paia has good restaurants aplenty. We have three cafes in Haiku, and three small groceries; and then there are all the others we tell you about on our bulletin board.

Additional Information:
If you know Maui or have read about the island, the term "Up Country" is familiar. This area of the island doesn't have tourism as its primary focus. Nor, in our case, does it have to be "up." Maui is known as an island microcosm; Kihei is a desert, Haleakala a 10,000-foot mountain crater, and the east side of the island was all rainforest before deforestation. Our particular "Up Country" area is tropical. We're located on the ocean side of the Hana Highway, seven miles beyond Paia. Haiku has, in the past ten years, expanded from a small rural village serving a very local population to an area that includes individuals wanting to build large homes on acreage in lush tropical surroundings. Who would have predicted a gourmet deli in Haiku Town? Haiku is just 13 miles from the Kahalui Airport. On the way to the house, you'll pass Hookipa Beach-world renowned for its windsurfing competitions-and Mama's Fish House, rated the number one fish restaurant by US News and World Report.
