Additional Information:
Utila town, built in Key West style along the harbor front, is home to approximately 3500 English speaking residents of European descent, living together with about 2000 Spanish speaking Hondurans. About 110 fishermen live on the Cayes catching fish with hand-lines solely. Net-fishing or spear guns are not allowed around the island. Every evening and weekends especially islanders enjoy meeting at "Bar in the Bush", "Coco Loco" or the "Casino" for partying and dancing. Utila has medical facilities, two banks, a cinema, post office, several internet cafés and various stores. Payan findings The island was considered home of Payan Indians. Slumberland runs a project of scientific evaluation of findings made by us and other locals in over and under-water caves. Today there are less than 90 Payans left living on the coast. Pottery found by Gunter Kordovsky, a long time Austrian resident, dates back to Pre-Columbian years. Discovered by Columbus in 1502, the Payan Indians were enslaved by 1528. In later years Utila was home to various buccaneers throughout the years such as Captain Morgan with British settlement finally occurring in 1836.
