Train runs from Willits to Wolf Tree through a tunnel and over the coastal mountain range. Perfect daytrip! Lasts 1 to 1.5 hours. Mendocino County Museum East Commercial Street (707) 459-2736 The Museum exhibits local artifacts that tell stories of Mendocino County's past. In the Exhibit Hall visitors will see one of the finest collections of Yuki and Pomo Indian basketry, objects recovered from the 1850 Frolic shipwreck and rare horse drawn vehicles. Seabiscuit exhibit. The museum is open Weds. through Sun., 10am to 4:30pm. Admission is free. Roots of Motive Power (707) 459-2736 Antique Steam Logging Equipment Display - Located next to the museum. This is an outdoor display of authentic, working antique steam-powered logging equipment. Members of this volunteer organization work tirelessly throughout the year to preserve part of our history. During special events the equipment is "steamed-up" and the public can see how the equipment was used during the 1800's. The Roots of Motive Power Festival is held in September each year. This tourist attraction boasts the World's Largest Redwood Chainsaw Sculpture, a Mystery House (where you can walk up a wall and watch balls roll uphill!), Mountain Train Ride (seasonal), The Redwood Shoe, gift shop and snack bar (seasonal). The Center has guided tours or you can take a self-guided tour of the grounds. The center features a renewable energy control center, play learn area, native wetland, northern forest and main building where the walls are made of rice straw bales and covered with a mixture of soil and cement which creates a wall with an R-67 insulation factor. Main Street Ukiah, CA 95482 (707) 462-3370 Art history and anthropology museum focusing on the life works of Grace Hudson, Dr. John W. Hudson and other members of a distinguished local family. Exhibits tell stories of native Pomo Indians, career of Grace Hudson and ethnologist John Hudson. The Sun House is a Craftsman bungalow built by the Hudsons in 1911 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Open Wednesday - Saturday 10am - 4:30pm, Sunday Noon - 4:30pm.
